We guarantee our workmanship … no question about that.  Even if the wood has it’s weaknesses or flaws (it does happen).  How you care for the board when you take it home is a whole another story.

Our intention here at Mac Cutting Boards is that you receive goods exactly as described but, if you do need to make a return, our intention is to make it hassle free.  If the product you have received is defective, we will gladly ship you another at our expense.  FOR SURE!  If the product has been damaged in transit, we will provide a replacement.  No questions asked.  For both defective and damaged products, we asked that you contact us within 10 days of the receipt of the cutting board.  The sooner the better, that way we can start making another one for you.  Remember, all our boards are made to order.  Any claims made after 10 days , we can not be accept.

I mentioned earlier that we cannot guarantee how the cutting board is cared for once it comes home to you.  Please refer to our care instructions.  It is important that you understand how to care for a wooden cutting board.  Putting it in the dishwasher or leaving it under water for a period of time will most certainly damage the board in a matter of time.  It will dry up and crack as shown here in the picture.

Whenever Bart and I are at shows, we are asked so many frequent questions of the same topics.  I love it!  I realize we are educating our customers.  Awesome!

Here are some of those questions that are being asked.

1. What type of woods are these cutting boards made of?

  • They are made strictly from hardwoods.  We repurpose and upcycle unused scrap hardwoods we obtain from cabinet and furniture makers, hardwood flooring installers and other wood professionals.  Our criterias are: unused, untreated, unstained and hardwoods.

2. How are these cutting boards are made and where?

They are made with a wood glue called Tite Bond III – FDA approved and premium wood glue.  We cut the scrap hardwoods into strips and glue each piece together to form a shape of the board with high pressure clamps and let dry.  We then plane it and sand it down.  We finish it with beeswax and mineral oil coating.  We manufacturer our cutting boards in San Bruno, California.

3. How do I care for my wood cutting board?

Easy.  Soap and water then let dry naturally.  Every now and again, put a coat of mineral oil throughout your board to maintain consistency.  Wood is like your skin.  When it gets dry, it will crack.  Do not clean your wooden cutting board in your dish washer.  Heat and excess water are enemies to your board.  Avoid it.

Trust me!  A cutting board is an absolute “must have” tool you need for your kitchen.  I don’t care what anyone says.  You need it to help prepare your meals by slicing and dicing all the necessary ingredients for your meal.  It doesn’t matter if it semi-homemade to full blown homemade, you’re gonna need a cutting board.  Goes hand in hand with a good knife.  But I digress.  So, how do you find a great cutting board?  You start by deciding what type of cutting board suits your needs and lifestyle.

Ask yourself plastic or wood.  Simple right?  There are many great benefits to both.  Plastic makes life easier when cleaning.  Just stick in the in dishwasher and you’re done.  Doesn’t make for a good serving platter, but it does the job.  A wooden cutting board needs a little care.  Can’t put it in the dishwasher as it will dry up and potentially crack.  Hand wash is best.  You will need to put mineral oil every now and again when you start to see it dry up.  But did you know that wood is a natural fighter of bacteria?  Yes … look it up.  Ask the Professor from UC Davis who conducted a study on plastic vs. wood cutting boards.  Very interesting.  Plus wooden cutting boards can be absolutely gorgeous because of the natural colors of the woods.  Easy on the eye.

All woods are porous.  Some more so than others.  With that in mind, wood does dry out.  Some conditions can rapidly dry out wood if you don’t maintain it.  The type of wooden cutting board makes the difference as well – soft woods vs hard woods.  Softer woods lends to larger pores vs hard woods lends to smaller pores.  Bottom line, it is all in how you care for the board.  Here’s a few tips on how to keep your wooden cutting board from drying out and maintaining it.

  1. Keep your board on a dry surface and standing upright (if you can).  Keeps circulation to the board.
  2. Avoid placing your board under the sun for a period of time.
  3. Avoid humid and dry areas to store your board
  4. Do not wash your cutting board in the dishwasher.  The dishwater brings excess water to the board and heat.  Both are not good.
  5. Do not bleach your board.  I know there are some instructional blogs that says you can.  You can, however, bleaching does dry up the board and can strip away the natural colors of the woods.  If you have a beautiful and colorful cutting board, I would recommend not to use bleach.
  6. Handwash with soap and water is plenty.  Wood is a natural fighter of bacteria.
  7. Apply mineral oil once a week.  Wood is like your skin.  When you see it dry, apply oil to maintain it.

Choosing a cutting board is really very simple.  Just think of the 3 things:

  1. Why you are buying one
  2. What you want to use it for
  3. Ease of use

That’s it.  When you keep that focus into perspective, you just narrow down your choices.  Here are the different types of cutting boards that are out there:

  • Wood cutting boards – soft vs hardwood cutting boards.  Easy enough.  Hardwoods last longer.  Soft woods tend to be replaced sooner rather than later.  Style really comes to play when you see one.  But a wood cutting board is sturdy, lasts a long time with proper care and can be flexible meaning it can be used as a home decor, serving platter or simply just to cut on.  A little maintenance required.  Do not place it in the dishwasher to clean.  That can ruin your board.
  • Plastic cutting boards – ease of use.  Can be placed in the dishwasher.  Comes in different colors.  Functional, but I wouldn’t consider it flexible meaning I can’t imagine using it as a serving platter or a home decor.
  • Glass or granite cutting boards – gorgeous to look at.  Ease of use.  A bit heavy.  Can be placed in the dishwasher.  The caveat is that the tiny chards of glass or granite may go into your food.  Not good.

Whenever I’m at a craft show, I’m often asked “how do you take care of a cutting board?”, “what should I NOT do with a cutting board?”.  To know what to do with a wood cutting board, you should know how to care for one.

Here are things you should not do with a wood cutting board:

1. Do not place it in a dishwasher when you want to wash it.  Water and heat are 2 enemies of wood.  Too much water can attract mold and heat can dry up the wood and eventually crack it.

2. Do not use food oil product to oil your board.  Wood is porus and therefore needs oil that would dry up from the inside of the wood.  Food oil made turn the wood rancid and develop mold.

3. Do not place the board under the sun for a long period of time.  It can warp the board and dry out the wood.

Do wash it with soap and water.  Do use mineral oil to maintain your board.  Guarantee it will last for years to come.

Maintaining your wood cutting board is really very easy.  Just under 5 minutes a month (or if you are ambitious, once a week), you can maintain your cutting board to keep it’s beauty and structure in order for it to lasts for years to come.  Washing it with soap and water (no dishwasher) after each use is essential in order to wash away the stains and odor.

Take these steps on how to oil your cutting board.  You would want to do this when you are about to retire for the evening.

1. Make sure it is thoroughly dried off.  Do not put oil onto your cutting board after you had just washed it.  The oil will not be able to soak into the wood as it should

2. Once completely dry, apple a quarter size amount of mineral oil (a combination of beeswax and mineral is preferred – it helps seal the wood).  Try Howard’s Oil.

3. Use a cotton cloth to rub the oil throughout the board.  Make sure to get it’s sides and back.

4. Once it is thoroughly oiled all over, let the board sit on your kitchen counter against the backsplash overnight.  Do not place it on the floor.  If there are pools of oil still left on the board the next day, wipe it off with a dry cotton cloth.  It just means that the board is done taking in the mineral oil it needs.

Ready for another day of use.

 

How to Take Care of Your Custom Made Wood Cutting Board

Taking care of a wooden cutting board is very easy. First thing you should know is that wood is a natural fighter of bacteria. Bacteria does not live on wood surfaces. But what wood does not get rid of is odor and stain. Here are the steps you need to take in order to care for, maintain and have your cutting board lasts for many years to come.

1. Wash it with soap and warm water. Wipe excess water on the board and prop it against your backsplash or wall to let it dry naturally.

2. If there are signs of stains, cut a lemon in half and take some coarse salt. Sprinkle the salt over the stained area and take the 1/2 lemon wedge and scrub thoroughly. After the stain had been lifted, do step #1.

3. Use mineral oil about once a week. Maintain your cutting board like you are taking care of your skin when it is dry – applying lotion on it. Mineral oil your board when you start seeing it looking dry. This particular step would help maintain your cutting board for the future.

4. Do not place your board in the dish washer. It can unnecessarily dry your board rapidly and can warp or crack.

5. Do not use bleach on your cutting board especially if it has colors. Bleach will lift the natural colors and cannot come back.

How to Clean and Care for Your Wooden Cutting Board

No kitchen can do without an awesome cutting board … a wooden cutting board to boot.  Ok … now that you have a wooden cutting board, how do you care for it?  Lots of advice out there.  If you take it all in, it just may confuse you.  However, there are common themes to most advices on what to do in order to care and clean for your wooden cutting board.  Let me help you summarize that up.

1.  First, do not ever ever ever wash your wooden cutting board in the dishwasher.  Two biggest enemies of any wood is heat and water.  Heat dries up the wood causing it to potentially split and therefore create bacteria in the cracks of the wood.  Water can be excessive and soak into the wood.  Once water stays in the wood, mold can form and grow.  Any wood must dry thoroughly from any washing.  Do not submerge the board in water and leave it there.

2.  So what to do?  Simply wash your wooden cutting board in soap and water.  Wipe off the excess water from the wooden cutting board and prop it up against your backsplash and let it dry naturally.  Wood is a natural fighter of bacteria.  Bacteria that stays on the surface eventually gets killed off by the wood itself.  Check out this UC Davis article from Dr. Dean O. Cliver PhD who performed an experiment on signs of bacteria between wood vs plastic cutting boards.  Wood prevailed.

3.  When the cutting board looks a bit dry, add mineral oil liberally throughout the board and let it sit overnight.  Stand the board on the end or prop it up.  Re-oiling the board if it looks as if the board is still thirsty.   Trust me.  It is like lotion to your skin.  Oiling your cutting board helps it from drying and splitting in the process.  Where do you get mineral oil?  You can buy expensive wood oil (if you like), but the drug store mineral oil would do just fine.  Should you use olive oil or walnut oil?  I recommend not to.  Any food base oil can seep through the wood and stay inside the wood causing it to potentially rot and mold.

4.  What happens when it starts to show signs of wear … knife marks, fuzzy look.  Easy fix.  Take a fine 320-grit sandpaper and lightly sand your cutting board until it becomes smooth.  After sanding it, apply mineral oil once again to bring the board back to life.

5.  What to do with strong odors like onions, garlic or other strong scented foods on your board?  Use baking soda.  It works.
