Paddle Cutting Boards

Right?  We are often asked what is a paddle board? Whenever we are at a craft shows, inevitably there will always be someone picking up one of our wooden paddle cutting boards, taking the handle and the batter’s position then swinging the board towards their partner’s butt.  Like they are about to hit a baseball or something.  I often say … “whoa … what you do with that behind close doors is totally your business”.  HA!

But what is a paddle cutting board?  No it’s not a stand up surf board.  It is simply just that … a cutting board but with a handle.  To hang the board after use.  Sometimes to display the board because it looks nice.  For ease of picking up the board and moving it from one side to the other in your kitchen.

Here are a few ideas on how you can use your paddle cutting board besides to cutting on it.

1. A sandwich tray – lunch time tray.  Place your sandwich and chips and viola!

2. A dinner plate – it’s small enough to and large enough to hold your dinner on it.

3. A cheese board – to serve your cheese and crackers on.

4. A candle holder – in the middle of your dining table.

Heart Shaped Boards and a Wedding Rehearsal Party

Flowers in a Mason Jar

Flowers in a Mason Jar

A wedding rehearsal party is an essential plan to your process.  This event symbolizes that last night of being single and celebrating the next day’s nuptials.  It also represents how thankful you both are to your family and friends for being a part of your special day.  Normally, this is done at a restaurant or it can be catered at a special location.  But I want to give you ideas on how to use decor to establish the mood as a beginning to the wedding event festivities.

Heart Shaped Cutting Boards

1. Decorate the room with fresh flowers (color is your choice – I recommend white flower and use color ribbons to represent the colors of your wedding).  Add them in a mason jar and bring the mood to a rustic yet elegant affair.

2. Use burlap as a table cover.  Not completely covering the entire table.  Use the tablecloth provided and add burlap diagonally.

3. Use heart shape cutting boards as serving platters.  Perfect mood setting.  Put your appetizers on it, main course, desserts … awesome!  Better yet, engrave one of them with your first names and your wedding date on it and display it right as your guests enters the room.  Brilliant!

Have a Great Handmade Product | Sell Wholesale

The making of our wood cutting boards

The making of our wood cutting boards

Mac Cutting Boards has been in business for almost 5 years now.  Making custom made cutting boards from repurposing and upcycling unused scrap hardwoods.  We started off as a hobby business.

We sold our products strictly online and at craft shows.  This past year, we decided to have a wholesale program.  It’s a sign that our business has products that people want and cannot reach and that our business was ready to expand.

Here’s a few tips on how to put together a wholesale program for your business.

MCB Wholesale Pricing 2014

1. Put together a wholesale price list that you can live with.  You don’t have to sell your products at 50% the retail price.  You’ve invested quite a bit of time and energy developing a handmade product, work with a price you can live with.

2. Set a minimum order whether it would be in dollars or per piece.

3. Set a minimum re-order (which is generally less that the original order amount).

4. Set your credit terms: net 15 days (meaning your customer pays you in 15 days after date of invoice or date of receipt), no credit terms which means pay up front.  Make it clear how you would like to be paid.  It is important to keep your business alive when your customers pay you in a timely manner.

5. Set aside a few products for wholesale (unless of course you could manage with all your inventory).  It is always best to just try out a few products for wholesale that way you can validate how your manufacturing must be in order to fulfill orders.

6. Indicate your turnaround time.  Your potential customers will want to know this.

7. Have samples to show or hand out to potential customers.  Make sure to write them down if you are handing them out as they can be used for tax deductions later (consult your bookkeeper).

8. Put all of this together in a pricing sheet and/or catalog with pictures.

9. Make sure to tell your story.  Handmade products deserves to have the word out – how they are made, if you are repurposing, recycling or upcycling, whether your product is sustainable and where it is made.

Keep in mind, by wholesaling your products you will obtain repeat business (reaching people you yourself would not have been able to reach even with your website) and your orders and payments will be in bulk.  Nice!

Wood Cutting Board for Entertaining

No person who loves to cook should be without their tools one of which is a cutting board.  We all know how essential a cutting board is when preparing a meal.  But how about using it for something else other than cutting on it?  Using it as serving platter to entertain your guests.  Yes, you heard that right.  Entertain your guests with your custom made wood cutting board.  Here are a few ways to entertain with your board:

Cutting Board with a Chalk Board

1. Cheese platter.  Take your cutting board and apply chalk paint just at the bottom of the board (longways).  This way, you can write what type of cheese you are serving.  Genius!

2. A pizza tray.  Yup no better way to serve your pizza than on a beautiful cutting board.  It’s easier on the eye to look at the beauty of wood.

3. Dinner plates.  Buy several small cheese cutting boards (based on the number of guests you will be serving) and place their meal right on the board.

However you decide on the uses for entertaining with your cutting board, you will definitely start some interesting conversations with your guests.

Wood Cutting Boards | Chopping and Carving Boards

What is the difference?  I say none.  Just the name.  All in all wood cutting boards (or wood chopping boards or wood carving boards) are absolutely the choice of professionals.  Most chefs we have custom made a cutting board for absolutely want to work with a wood cutting board.  I find that most of them love a very thick and large board.  More to work with on the surface.  Me personally, I love a small, thin cutting board.  Easier to manage, handle and carry from the sink to the stove.  But what are the choices out there?  Here a few of my favorite shapes, designs and sizes.

Paddle Cutting Boards

Paddle Cutting Boards

Paddle cutting boards are awesome because of the size and convenience.  They are usually a small cheese board size and has a handle for ease of moving the board around.

Trivets and Cheese Boards

Trivets and Cheese Boards

Trivets and cheeseboards have a variety of shapes depending upon what your needs are.  Some are shaped as a serving platter and others are shaped circular for decor purposes.  All have the same functionality, to use the surface to cut on or present your appetizers or meal.

Large Wood Cutting Boards

Large Wood Cutting Boards

These large wood cutting boards are perfect for the avid cooks in your household (particularly if they are men who absolutely loves to cook) and bbq’ers.  They love working with the larger sizes for more room to chop on and set aside items for later in their cooking process.  Here’s a great hint, if you are in the market for one as a gift, try getting a custom made cutting board that would fit right next to his barbeque grill.  He’ll love it!

Chevron Herringbone Design Cutting Board

Chevron Herringbone Design Cutting Board

My fav!  Our chevron herringbone pattern cutting board.  Usually, this design is offered in a larger size in order to show off the pattern.  Great for serving and as a decorative piece on your dining table.  What a conversation piece especially when you have guests over.  They will ask you “where did you get that!?”.

Wood cutting boards are usually best when they are made from hardwoods such as maple, walnut, mahogany, cherry and so on.  There are many varieties of hardwoods out there.  You want to stay away from softer woods such as pine and alder as they tend to bend and crack easily which would cause the need for you to replace your board quickly.  Hardwoods lasts for years especially if you care for it properly.  Check out our blog on caring for your cutting board.

Made in California | Handmade Wood Cutting Boards

So much emphasis these days are put into where and what products are made from.  I don’t blame them.  Even more importance is supporting our very own – United States made.  More and more Americans are driven to purchase their products made here in our own country.  A step above supporting our very own is repurposing, upcycling (taking unused scrap parts to recreate it into a new product) and recycling pieces to create a functional item you can use.

Repurpose and Upcycle Wood Cutting Boards

Repurpose and Upcycle Wood Cutting Boards

One of those repurposed products is our handmade wood cutting boards.  Our boards are made from unused scrap hardwoods.  Factory scraps we get from cabinet and furniture makers, hardwood flooring installers and anyone who works with hardwoods all have unused scraps that they would have thrown away or burn.  They have no use for these pieces anymore so why keep them around?  Mac Cutting Boards takes those unused pieces and create a functional, every day use item such as a cutting board.  Better yet, they are all made in the United States and specifically made in California.

Supporting locally made handmade products used for home decor, gardening, your wardrobe creates a huge economy for United States made products.  I’m a big proponent to supporting buying handmade.  You should check it out.  Start with Etsy and browse.  You’ll be amazed with what you’ll find.

Ways to Use Your Small Cheese Cutting Board

Small Cheese Cutting Boards

Small Cheese Cutting Boards

A small cheese cutting board is also known as a cheese board.  It is a perfect size for everyday use on cutting small items.  But did you know there are more ways to use a small cheese board?  Here’s 5 different ideas on what you can do to utilize a small cheese cutting board.

1. Serving platter for meats, cheeses, vegetables, fruits and crackers

2. Sandwich tray -perfect size for putting your individual sandwich for lunch.  Set yourself by the TV and place the sandwich tray AKA cheese cutting board on your lap and VIOLA!  Lunch is served!

3. Dinner plate – think about it.  Instead of serving on normal dinner plates, you can serve your dinner on a small cheese cutting board.  Buy all the same design or get them all different except for the size.  Keep the size about the same therefore it doesn’t look too odd.  Still, what a great conversation piece.  Also keep in mind, wood is a natural fighter of bacteria.  Simply washing the cutting board with soap and water and let it dry naturally.  You would do that with your good plates anyway.

4. Home decor platform for your candles or flowers

5. Home decor for your walls

Valentine’s Day and a Handmade Gift | Custom Engrave Cutting Board

Valentine’s Day is a traditional yearly holiday dedicated to couples.  Awesome!  A day that you can officially celebrate with your SPOUSE or SPICE of your life.  And everywhere you go, businesses (especially restaurants) celebrate right back with you with having roses and champagne ready for the couples to enjoy the start of their evening.  It really doesn’t matter what day of the week Valentine’s falls on.  Every couple out there celebrates no matter what.  The challenge is usually the following: (1) where to go to celebrate Valentine’s Day either dinner or a getaway (2) what to buy as a gift.  Am I right?

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine’s Day

Gifts are generally subjective.  But I do say find the right gift for the love of your life even if you think it’s a little corny.  Find out what makes them happy.  Pay attention to their face when they light up each and every time they see something.  That would give you an idea what to get as a gift.  Of course, you always have the chocolate and flowers as the good ‘ole standby but I say be creative.  Get something handmade or make it yourself.  Nothing says “I Love You” than a handmade gift.  Do they cook?  How about a handmade cutting board?  Just a thought.

Custom Engraved Cutting Board as a Handmade Wedding Gift

Wedding season is here!  Actually, it never ends.  There is always someone getting married at any given time of the year.  Love knows no limits or time for that matter.  But what do you do to go out and buy them a wedding gift?  First thing I would do is go through their wedding registry.  Find out what they need and get an idea of how they want to establish their decor as a couple.  You can definitely get an idea of what their tastes will be like by the choices they make in their wedding registry.  Also, where they are registered at.  That’s important.  But I’m not really here to encourage you to buy something from their registry.  What I am encouraging you is to find out what they need.  Something functional, daily use and eye catching.  Then take that idea and buy handmade.

Handmade Wedding Gift

How about a handmade cutting board?  Who doesn’t need a cutting board for their cutting?  An even better idea is a handmade cutting board custom engraved with their names and their wedding date on it.  Functional, useful, memorable and definitely eye catching.  Don’t buy a cutting board that is plain.  Buy one that has color and that resonates with you based on what you’ve come up with as their idea of decor through their wedding registry.  Brilliant!
