Kiss My Old Wooden Cutting Board Goodbye

Cracked Wooden Cutting Board

Cracked Wooden Cutting Board

It is that time!  You’ve been staring at your old wooden cutting board for months and have said to yourself “it’s time to replace it” but you haven’t done it yet.  Lack of motivation? Perhaps.  But nevertheless, I want to give you 3 good reasons why you want to get rid of that old board and replace it with something fabulous.

  1. If your board shows signs of cracking.  You definitely need to get rid of it.  Although wood is a natural fighter of bacteria, it can only combat them on the surface where there is air.  Beneath the surface and into the cracks, bacteria can live.  Yuck!
  2. If your board looks like it’s wet all the time.  That is NOT good.  That means your board is not drying up naturally.  This could cause it to crack or even break at the weak points.
  3. If your board looks like it has been cut up too much.  Signs of knife marks throughout the board.  It’s time.  Although, you can still salvage it but taking a fine sand paper and just sanding off the surface area which is where the knife marks are.

Motivated now!  I hope so.  If your cutting board means a lot to you, repurpose it. Sometimes, making it into something else other than what is it can be appreciated more in the future.  Like a chalk board.

Serving Up A Fresh Perspective on Wedding Gifts

Rosalinda Randall

Rosalinda Randall

I recently read an article on proper etiquette when it comes to giving wedding gifts by Rosalinda Randall, Your Relationship Edge.  It occurred to me that traditions have slowly faded away based on lifestyles we make today.

For example, couples today usually live together before they get married.  You rarely find a couple that hasn’t “officially” moved in together until AFTER they were married.  It seems so unusual right?  The idea behind living together is to find out whether or not you would be compatible with one another.   OK … so they find out that they are “happily ever after” so now the wedding planning begins.  Seems backwards, but these are the times.  What do you do when it comes to buying wedding gifts for a couple who’s been living together?  They would most certainly have what is needed in their home.  Right?  Hmmmm maybe.

Here’s what Rosalinda had to say about the proper etiquette when it comes to situation like this “asking for specific gifts is still considered “tacky” and an imposition on your guests“.  I do happen to agree with her so here’s a great strategy … bridal registries.  HA!  That way you can tell your guests what you do need without really telling them.  Now for bigger items, like TVs or a couch.  I would suggest to indicate on the registry you are willing to take gift cards especially if you are registering at Macy’s.  🙂

A Better Kitchen with a Wooden Cutting Board

Custom Made Cutting Board

Custom Made Cutting Board

Let’s face it, a kitchen is not a kitchen without a cutting board, right?  The one essential tool (along side a knife and a pot) that you need in order to function properly in that space.  But having a cutting board shouldn’t just be dull or boring.  Liven up your kitchen with a custom made wooden cutting board.  Not plastic although plastic does have some advantage – can be easily cleaned and placed in the dishwasher, light to carry around from countertop to countertop and inexpensive.

A wooden cutting board is all that and much more.  How much more?  Check it out.

1. A serving platter.  Yup.  Try it out.  I bet you’ll get “wow, never thought of using my cutting board like that before” comment.

2. A decorative piece.  Place candles on top of the board when you are not using it.  Position it center on your dining table and voila!  You have an elegant centerpiece.  Or maybe you just want to spiff up your kitchen with colors.  Just leave your board on the countertop and display it.  Your wooden cutting board is made all the natural colors of the wood that brings out the beauty of the board and your kitchen.

So the next time you’re looking at your kitchen and you think it needs pizzazz, try a custom made wooden cutting board.  Maybe even engraving it to personalize your space.  It will look fabulous!

Another Cool Way to Use Scrap Hardwoods

Repurpose and Upcycle

Repurpose and Upcycle

Repurposing, upcycling and recycling are today’s INs!  Eco-friendly and sustainable are words you will hear a lot too.  Organic and natural … natural … who says that anymore?  LOL.  But of the description above is what I love and what sparks creativity amongst all of us when we see an old item or scrap parts and make it into something really cool.  Here are a few great ideas I came across (thank you Serena Lee from Crafty Creative Gal).

Sunburst Mirror

Sunburst Mirror

1. Sunburst mirror – OMG this looks so good!  Thank you Pepper Design Blog on this fabulous idea.  Take pieces of hardwood planks and make this.  Stain it or leave for the natural color look.  Either way, you will get the “wow” factor when you have guests over.

2. Mail Sorter – made out of used pieces of pallet woods.  Thank you DIY n Crafts for this idea.  Give your room a rustic feel by taking a pallet, break it down and build a functional item.  I love this idea!

There are tons more ideas out there.  Don’t be afraid to seek them out!  Having trouble finding scrap hardwoods?  Check out my previous blog posts on that “Eliminating the Idea of Wasting Scrap Hardwoods“.  You’ll be amaze how easy it is to find them.  Happy DIY!

Tanya Brown – Author and Friend

Tanya Brown

Tanya Brown

I’ve met Tanya Brown in 2010 and I was immediately drawn to her energy, her passion, her kindness, her willingness to teach as well as to learn, her sense of humor and her wit.  We were at a 3-day workshop in Orange County.  I knew no one, but met Tanya.  She purchased a cutting board from me during that weekend.  I was shocked!  I was starting my business off and my first time really asking people “would you like to buy my cutting board”.  She did!

Tanya is well known as the youngest sister of Nicole Brown Simpson.  She has been a vocal and well-recognized speaker against domestic violence. What most people do not know is that Tanya suffered a mental breakdown ten years after the death of her sister, and spent many months in an in-patient and out-patient program.  You would never know that today.  I met Tanya and she was an energy source that you wanted to warm yourself around … like a comfy blanket.  She is calming and angelic.

Tanya has released her book “Finding Peace Amongst Chaos” and has a fabulous write up on People Magazine.  She reached out and asked if I could donate a cutting board at her book release party.  I didn’t hesitate!  Anything for this lady! Feeling blessed that she is in my life!

How to Make a Wooden Cutting Board

IMG_3675Making a wooden cutting board is easier than you think.  The hard part is having the tools and knowing how to use them.  So if you are a fabulous learner and want to know how to make your very own wooden cutting board, check out this blog tutorial.

Unused Scrap Hardwoods

Unused Scrap Hardwoods

1. First, select the woods you want to use.  I recommend hardwoods such as walnut, maple, mahogany, cherry and so on.  Please refer to our list of hardwoods that are available.

2. Next use a compound miter saw to cut your hardwoods into strips.  Preferably 1″ thick.  Cut as many pieces you like based on how big you want your cutting board to be.  Think of length and the width of your board.

3. Next glue your strips together.  Use a wood glue that is FDA approved.  We use Tite Bond III Premium wood glue.  It’s a bit more expensive but the quality of the glue is so important especially when you are making a wooden cutting board.  Use high pressure clamps to glue the strips of woods together.  Wipe off any excess glue with a cotton cloth that may have seep out in between the wood strips – front, back and sides.   Let it dry for 24 hours (we recommend).

4. Next, use a chisel to chisel away any dried excess glue to smooth out the surface.  You will need a bench planer to further smooth out the rough edges of the woods once glued together.  This is an important step before you begin to sand.  Planing your board before sanding means less sanding you have to do.  Use the table saw again to cut out the edges of the board to even it out based on your original measurements you want your cutting board to be.

Drum Sander

Drum Sander

5.  Now you are ready to sand!  A drum sander is always ideal in to make the process of sanding a lot faster, however, if you are just making this board for yourself, hand sanding it will do just fine.  Sand your board until it is smooth.  This requires patience.  However, it is your own personal cutting board.  Sand it down until you are satisfied with it.

Round off the edges to make it a smoother finished look.

6. Last step, apply mineral oil generously.  Let it dry with the oil on top overnight.  You’ll be amazed how much the wood would soak up the oil when it needs it.  We use Howard’s Mineral oil.

Mac Cutting Boards Return Policy

Return Policy

We guarantee our workmanship … no question about that.  Even if the wood has it’s weaknesses or flaws (it does happen).  How you care for the board when you take it home is a whole another story.

Our intention here at Mac Cutting Boards is that you receive goods exactly as described but, if you do need to make a return, our intention is to make it hassle free.  If the product you have received is defective, we will gladly ship you another at our expense.  FOR SURE!  If the product has been damaged in transit, we will provide a replacement.  No questions asked.  For both defective and damaged products, we asked that you contact us within 10 days of the receipt of the cutting board.  The sooner the better, that way we can start making another one for you.  Remember, all our boards are made to order.  Any claims made after 10 days , we can not be accept.

Damaged Cutting Board

Damaged Cutting Board

I mentioned earlier that we cannot guarantee how the cutting board is cared for once it comes home to you.  Please refer to our care instructions.  It is important that you understand how to care for a wooden cutting board.  Putting it in the dishwasher or leaving it under water for a period of time will most certainly damage the board in a matter of time.  It will dry up and crack as shown here in the picture.
