Upcycle This! Scrap Hardwoods Repurposed

Scrap hardwoods

Scrap hardwoods

Scrap hardwoods?  Believe it or not, there is a whole sleuth of them out there.  United States still manufactures quite a bit of stuff.  It’s just that they are not mass produced.  Which makes the produce unique, one of kind and well, handcrafted.  A new trend for the past several years is really taking the US by storm and that is to buy handmade and buy USA.

With this much manufacturing, there is bound to be scraps.  For our purpose, let’s discover where to find scrap hardwoods.

1. Kitchen remodeling – still made with 100% hardwoods like cherry, oak, walnut or maple.  Each piece is cut to the right size depending upon the kitchen.

2. House building – some fabricated materials such as  MDF (medium density fiber board – which is cost effective) are used, but you can still find the good stuff out there.

3. Furniture making – US manufacturers are especially anal about using 100% natural woods.

Just these sources alone can keep you busy finding UNUSED scrap hardwoods – UPCYCLING (unused scraps repurposed).  Here are some great ideas on what to do with unused scrap hardwoods.  The list is endless.  These are just a few.

1. Wall mounted bottle openers – the backing makes the opener stand out

2. Cutting boards

3. Bread knives

4. Peppermills

Man Cave! What is the Perfect Gift?

Superbowl Sunday is just around the corner.  There is virtually someone you know that has a “man cave” set up in their home to host an event like this.  Or any other sporting event for that matter.  I bet it’s your significant other … HA!  No issues there, but his birthday is just around the corner, what to get him?  Here’s a few ideal suggestions for your “man cave” recipient:

1. Wall mounted bottle opener – not just any bottle opener, but a vintage, “match the theme of the man cave” bottle opener.  Here’s few suggestions – Coca Cola or Pepsi, Budweiser, Fireman (if he is a fireman), USA flag, Guinness, Grand Prize Lager Beer (look it up – it’s an old Howard Hughes brewery).

2. Man Cave Sign – YAH!  The cave is not complete without a sign!  I love this shop that I found on Etsy – Gypsy DayDreamers.  Cool stuff.  Check it out!

3. Sports rug – a themed sports run or his favorite sporting team.

Guys are simple.  Keep him happy with food, the other “s” word and his man cave and you can’t go wrong.  Oh, don’t forget the big screen TV.  I didn’t mentioned the obvious.  Enjoy!  Want more decor ideas?  Check out this blog – Man Cave Blog (what else?). OOO RAHH!!!

Vintage Wall Mounted Bottle Openers

Bottle OpenersDid you know that there are several different varieties of bottle openers?  Who knew?  They are:

Guinness Wall Mounted Bottle OpenerThere are new ones you can get on the internet and in stores and they are ones that are vintage and antique.  These are the ones my husband and I LOVE to collect!  All serves the same purpose which is removes the bottle cap from the bottle you want to drink from.  So what is so unique about a wall mounted bottle opener?  Convenience and great to look at when you get the right style and design for your home or as a gift.  It is also very personal.  You have to know what they like.  Right?  They may like a specific kind of soda, a kind of beer or a drink.  Are they in public service such as a fireman or served in our armed forces like the Navy or Marines?  How about a world traveler, Belize, Panama, Cuba, Venezuela or Ireland?  Or they may just LOVE a store such as Home Depot.

Whatever you choose, rest assure you or the person you are gifting it to would absolutely LOVE THEM!  A novelty item with a purpose!  Now that’s pretty awesome!

Personalized Wedding Gifts – Custom Engrave Cutting Boards

Custom Engraved Cutting Board

What a great idea!  Nothing says original and unique than a personalized gift.  When going to a wedding and you are considering a wedding gift, think of these 3 factors before you make your decision to buy one:

1. What does the couple need?

2. Do they have a bridal registry?

3. Do you want to give the gift of “WOW”?

Wedding Invitation Design

Wedding Invitation Design

Customizing a gift is just that – personalized just for the happy couple.  So what do you say?  Here’s a few suggestions:

1. Write the bride and groom’s first name on the 1st line then the date of their wedding on the 2nd line.

2. A saying that you are connected with them.  “Kiss the Cook!” as the example above.

3. The design on their wedding invitation.  Now talk about original!

Not only are you wanting to be unique, but also you want your gift to be used and enjoyed for many years to come.  Consider your options when purchasing a gift.  I for one, am not a huge fan of bridal registry, however, it is sometimes a necessity as they usually put on their list items they will need.  But I say, consider a handmade gift.  Something that comes from the heart.  A gift with not only a lot of thought into it, but also a lot of love.

Repurposing An Old Sewing Machine

Non Electric Sewing MachineThese past few months, Bart and I go out and “pick”.  I guess we are “pickers” but just on the weekend.  We do not even claim to know what we are doing when we are out there picking.  Usually, we find people’s junk that they want to throw out and determine if they are our treasures.  And we found just that … a treasure … the old non-electric sewing machine.  All in all, they are not worth much as they are in abundance.  Each garage sale we go to, you can almost always find an old non-electric sewing machine stored away.  Usually have some personal connection to them.  “It’s my grandmother’s sewing machine.”  “I remember when my mom sewed our clothes on this.”  Hence, they are still in storage.  No one wants to throw it away.  But I say, don’t throw away or sell it at a garage sale.  Instead consider repurposing it.  Here’s what Mac Cutting Boards has done.

Refurbished Non Electric Sewing Machine1. Took apart the machine and left the stands.

2. Added our custom made butcher block on top of the machine and secure it.

3. Voila!  It’s a banquet table or a cutting board or a display table.  Whatever you like!  It’s a fabulous idea to repurpose a piece of nostalgic furniture that has sentimental value and reuse it to your convenience.

Having a Business Account on Pinterest

Pinterest BusinessJust recently, we received an email from Pinterest stating that we were qualified to convert our existing Pinterest page to a “business” Pinterest page.  If you are like me, I thought to myself “I had no idea I didn’t have a business Pinterest page already set up.”  Then I realized that I needed to make sure that my Pinterest is a business account and not a personal account.  Why?  It legitimizes you as a online retailer and as a online business.  It also helps you in SEO (search engine optimization).

So what is the difference between a “personal” and a “business” account on Pinterest? The main difference between the two is that Pinterest requires any account that wishes to use Pinterest for commercial purposes to create a business account.  It also gives us access to the analytics and an entire set of features exclusively for businesses such as advertising and marketing your Pinterest page online.  Check out this blog on the “how to convert” your Pinterest page.

Kitchen Charm Could Never Be More Simple Than This!

Custom Made Pull Out Wooden Cutting Board

Custom Made Pull Out Wooden Cutting Board

Before

Before

A wooden cutting board completes your kitchen.  Don’t you think?  Your kitchen’s ambience is all your style and charm for sure.  But your selection of what cutting board to use on a daily basis really says a lot about your kitchen’s decor.  It’s the bow that completes the package.  Often times, when you have a gorgeous board, it is used as a decor in itself.  Either hanging or propped up for anyone to see.

Most kitchens already came with a pull out wooden cutting board that came with the kitchen when it was first construct.  And in most cases, they are absolutely gross.  Am I right?  No matter what you do to try to clean it, it still stays icky.  Here’s a few ideas on what to do to spiff up your current pull out cutting board.

1. Use a fine grit sandpaper and sand down both sides of the board.  An electric sander can really speed up the process.  Wash the board before sanding.

2. After sanding, use mineral to coat the entire board.  Prop it up against your backsplash or against your wall with a towel underneath it to capture all the oil that may drip down.

3. Do not paint the board.  It will make it unuseable.

That’s it.  Should be like “new” again.  If you’re still not satified with your new pull out board, have it replaced.

It goes without saying.  What a decor piece it is when it is a custom engraved cutting board. And not just any personalized board, but one that is specific to you and your family.  But let’s not take away it’s functionality.  It is still a cutting board – used for every day cooking with your chopping of fruits, vegetables, sandwiches, spices and meats.  But most don’t think of it as a kitchen charm.  A piece that would finish the atmosphere of your kitchen to say it is mine!

1. Mason Jars – what a better way to organize your kitchen but with these fabulous jars.  Buy chalk stickers to label them so everyone in your household knows what goes into them.  Make it garden!  What a great idea!

2. Chalk Cutting Board – have an old cutting board but don’t want to throw it away?  Try sanding it down with fine sandpaper.  Then, take chalk paint and paint one side (2 to 3 coats would do the trick).  Voila! Instant chalk board.  Hang it onto your wall where you can post today’s menu or reminder.

Business Networking – Is it Worth Your Time

Business Networking

Business Networking

I am often asked why do you network for your business? Do you really get any business from it?  Is it worth your time?  I say … ABSOLUTELY!  Don’t for a moment believe that it is not worth your time.  It is SO worth it!  But how do you effectively make it work for you?  Are you socializing or trying to sell your product?

Mac Cutting Boards

Mac Cutting Boards

It doesn’t matter what business you have.  Take ours for example.  Our business is handcrafting hardwood cutting boards.  We make it from repurposing and upcycling unused scrap hardwoods.  Who wants to buy cutting boards at a business networking event, right?  You would be amazed at the answer.  These are a few questions we are often asked.  Here’s a few tips on how to effectively network for your business.

1.  Have an agenda, a goal.  Here’s an example, meet and collect 10 new business cards to follow up with them.

2.  Do not discount those you meet.  You never know if they may become a customer or may be able to refer you to a potential customer.

3.  Be intentional and sincere.  You are there to meet people.  So meet them.  Get to know them.

4.  Be consistent.  Pick 2-3 networking events you will consistently attend.  It takes time for you to get to know people and vice versa.  This is a community you are building for yourself.  it will pay off in the end.
